Predation plays an important role in the overall health of an ecosystem since it regulates the population of preys as well as maintain the population of higher-level consumers. If predators were eliminated from an ecosystem, it would cause an increase of the population of preys and potentially decrease the population of other organisms on lower trophic levels. An example of such effect can be seen from the population of rabbits and plants supposing that foxes, eagles and snakes are eliminated from the ecosystem. The rabbit population will multiply, causing a decrease in the population of plants such as grass that rabbits feed on.
