Mutations are modifications to the DNA of an organism that by adding new alleles, generate variation within a species. Some mutations are dangerous and through natural selection are easily removed from the population; harmful mutations preclude animals from achieving and reproducing sexual maturity.

By modifying its physical features (or phenotype), mutations can effect an organism or can change the way DNA codes genetic information (genotype). They can cause the termination (death) of an organism as mutations occur, or they can be partly lethal.
