What typically happens to a population if it exceeds its carrying capacity?

In situations where the population density of a given species exceeds the ecosystem’s carrying capacity, the species will deplete its source of food, water, or other necessities. - it is described as the transfer of genes from one population to another population so that frequency of gene is increased.
