For example, 47, XY, +18 indicated that the patient has 47 chromosomes is male, and has an extra chromosome 18. A female missing a 5th chromosomes would be written as 45, XX, -5. Special Note: If a patient has an extra or missing sex chromosome, it is simply designated by writing the sex chromosomes that are present, without the number at the third part of the notation.
