These characters make it a clear choice for a species whose invasion is likely to have significantly affected native cavity‐nesting birds. They are known to peck holes in other birds eggs, rid the nest of materials, and even kill the babies found in the nest.

Starlings also damage fruit and grain crops. Bird damage to grapes in the US was estimated to be at least $4.4 million in 1972; and starlings were one of the species that caused the most damage. Starlings also damage ripening cherry crops.

They are considered invasive by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Their corrosive droppings can damage all kinds of objects and surfaces. They spread the seeds of weeds and eat large amounts of grain crops. Because of their enormous flocks, they can interfere with aviation.
