How do water's relative densities as a solid and liquid differ from that of most other substances

Under normal ambient conditions water is less dense as a solid than as a liquid, so ice floats on water. Most materials are more dense as solids.

the main thing i would use is bricks because if there is a hurricane, there is a great possibility for the house to still stand. and i would also use plexiglass windows instead of regular windows because plexiglass isn't prone to breaking.
