Adenosine triphosphate is a molecule that stores and transfers energy in living cells. The ability of the ATP molecule to store and transfer usable energy lies on the two phosphoanhydride bonds that holds its phosphate groups together.

It should be noted that energy is stored when a phosphate group is added to ADP to make ATP. Oh the other hand, energy is released when the bond that holds the last phosphate group is broken. From the diagram, it can be deduced that D represents the high-energy bond that’s broken in ATP.

Adenosine triphosphate, commonly known as ATP, is a molecule that stores and transfers energy in living cells. The structure of ATP consists of a nitrogenous base (adenine), a 5-carbon sugar (ribose), and three phosphate groups, hence, making it a nucleotide.

However, the ability of ATP molecule to store and transfer usable energy lies on the two phosphoanhydride bonds that holds it's phosphate groups together. Energy is stored when a phosphate group is added to ADP to make ATP, while energy is released when the bond that holds the last phosphate group is broken, releasing the phosphate group in the process.

Based on this analogy, the BOND D represents the last bond in the attached image, hence, it is the high-energy bond that is broken in ATP.
