I know that by definition metabolism is the sum of chemical reactions that happen within each living cell and that provide energy for vital processes. But I can't really understand what definition is trying to be given in the following explanation about one of the major functions of lipids:

* Lipids are precursors of metabolically important chemicals while others are metabolically important.

What exactly does metabolically mean here?

Does it mean that lipids are substances from which substances important for sustaining life are made?
