The sensor senses or collects information about the current status of processes and sends them to the control center. The control center reads the information and compares it to the normal range of operations. If it is within the normal range of operation, the control center does nothing. Otherwise, activates effectors which act to bring back the process to within the normal range of operation.

In the case of the body temperature, the skin act as the sensor, the hypothalamus is the control center, while the skeletal muscles and the sweat glands are the effectors. If the body temperature is abnormally high, the sweat glands are called into action through vasodilation of blood vessels. The body sweats and the evaporation of the sweat produces cooling. If the body temperature is abnormally low, the skeletal muscles are called upon to and the body shakes to generate more heat.
