2. You have identified a new operon in E. coli. It enables E. coli to transition to metabolize a
new sugar called Sweetose. Sweetose is a disaccharide that needs a special enzyme to cut it
into monosaccharides one of which is glucose and one of which is fructose. Sweetose
obviously needs to enter the cell to be metabolized. The operon you discovered encodes the
two proteins needed to both get Sweetose into the cell and to metabolize it to glucose and
fructose.
You also find that Sweetose, upon entering the cell relieves repression of the operon.
You also find that fructose inhibits the Sweetose permease. Using drawings and words,
describe how this operon functions. Your drawings and text should describe the critical
genes (and their proteins) involved, the critical structural features of the operon, and how
the various compounds control the workings of the operon and Sweetose metabolism.
