Bullock’s and Baltimore Orioles interbreed where their range overlaps, and hybrids are viable and fertile. However, hybrids also molt twice a year, unlike either parental species, which molts only once per year. Molting is energetically expensive. Additionally, a phylogenetic tree of oriole species is displayed below. Using two species concepts that we discussed in class, explain whether Bullock’s and Baltimore Orioles are the same species or different species.
