The flying squirrel of North America very closely resembles the sugar glider of Australia. They are both similar in size, have long, bushy tails, and skin folds that allow them to glide through the air. From an evolutionary standpoint, however, they did not come from a common ancestor. The squirrel is a placental mammal while the sugar glider is a marsupial (very different embryonic development). These close similar adaptations, even though genetically and geographically separated by great distances, can best be explained by
A. Convergent Evolution
B. Spontaneous Generation
C. Divergent Evolution
D. Vestigial Structures
