The organisms that survive better are able to reproduce and pass their genes onto their offspring. But the organisms that survive are not always the ones who have the most complex traits.

For instance, if there are some organisms in a species that have super complex mating rituals, they may actually have a lower fitness because they are much pickier at choosing who they reproduce with and therefore have fewer offspring. The ones who have a very simple mating ritual could possibly reproduce more often and will therefore have a greater fitness as a result.
