The oxidation phosphorylation process which provides oxygen for cellular respiration is branched into two components – the electron transport chain and chemiosmosis.  

The electron transport chain gives rise to the proton gradient across the inner membranes of the mitochondria..

The steps of these processes are – delivery or reduced electrons, transfer of electrons, proton pumping, splitting of oxygen and water synthesis, synthesis of ATP driven by proton gradient.

The proton gradient drives ATP synthesis through chemisomosis. This proton gradient is created by the proton pumping process as the protons flow down their gradient (concentration level) in to the matrix via the enzyme ATP synthase. This spins the protons which catalyses the ADP to form ATP.
