The grey tree frog, Hyla versicolor has 48 chromosomes in each cell (except gametes, which have 24). When its karyotype is compared to Hyla andersonii’s karyotype (2n = 24), it looks like H. versicolor has a double set of H. andersonii’s karyotype. Thus, we call H. versicolor a(n) [A] (3 root word) to indicate that its polyploidy resulted form a single parent species, not from two different parent species; and we call H. versicolor a(n) [B] (2 root word) to indicate that it has twice as many chromosomes as its diploid parent species, or blending the two together, we would call it a(n) [C] (3 root word).
