A codon is a triplet of nucleotide which codes for a specific amino acid. A codon is made up of three nucleotides residues. There are 64 codons in existence. Every amino acid is coded for by at least one codon. An amino acid can be coded for by one or more codons. One out of the 64 codons (AUG) is the initiation or start codon which signals the commencement of translation, the initiation codon AUG also codes for methionine. Three out of the 64 codons do not code for any known amino acid and hence are called nonsense codons or stop or termination codons. They signal the termination of translation. The three termination codons are UGA, UAA and UAG.
