Homologous structures or homologous organs are described as organs of different species which are different in shape and structure and function from each other, but share a similar anatomy of the formation. For example, the fins of the whales, the hands of human, the wings of birds are all different in shape, sizes as well as function, but all of them share the same internal structure of bones formed of a humerus, a radius and an ulna with several carpals, metacarpals and phalanges. Study of these homologous organs describe the divergent evolution.

More similar the structure and function of homologous organs, more closely related are the species. For eg, monkeys use their forelimbs to eat and hold some object, similar is with humans. So monkeys are closely related to humans than birds who use their wings to fly.
