While an organism is developing, a process called “apoptosis”, or programmed cell death, leads to suiicide of certain cells. an example is in the tail of tadpoles. once a tadpole is mature enough to turn into a frog, the tail cells receive a “death signal” chemical, and the cell responds by shrinking, breaking up the nucleus, and then being completely destroyed by another frog cell. the chemicals that were within the tail cell are often recycled, and used to build new cells in the main body of the frog.
during apoptosis, which cellular organelle does the work of breaking up the nucleus and causing the cell to die?

a) ribosome

b) lysosome

c) mitochondrion

d) golgi apparatus
