when gases escape downward out the tail of a rocket, they push upward on the rocket. when layers of the earth collide, they force the earth upward, forming mountains.

Mitochondria produce atp, a high energy compound. atp is used for all sorts of enzyme-mediated reactions, such as making proteins/nucleotides/etc, certain compounds cross the cell membrane, muscles move, etc.  without this source of energy, a cell will die. it will not be able to repair itself, defend against pathogens, etc.

Although i don't know what is the simulated system, starfish are predators that eat mostly  microalgae,  snails, sponges, bivalves, mussels and other small marine animals. removing starfish from any system would definitely increase this animals that they prey.
