The contamination comes from multiple different sources, industry, mining, chemicals used in the agriculture etc. All of them cause serious damage to the living organisms, be it plants, animals, or humans. A direct contact with soil that has been contaminated with certain metals can even cause cancer. The mining is one of the biggest polluters of the soil. In the process of mining, lot of toxic chemicals are released in the surrounding area, mostly contaminating the soil and the water, and making them totally unusable for prolonged period of time.
