What is the difference between a fixed, hinge, gliding, and ball-and-socket joint?

A fixed joint is like the sutures of the skull. The joints hardly move. The hinge joint is those that have 90 degrees freedom of movement such as the elbow joint. Gliding joint occurs where one bone glides over the other's flat or nearly flat articular surfaces. Examples are those of the ankles. The ball-and-socket joint allows for 180-degree freedom of movement. An example is the joint at the hip bone.
