Why would a country want/need to shift to using fracking instead of traditional means of extracting fossil fuels?

A country would want or need to use the fracking method instead of the traditional methods of extraction of fossil fuels mainly because it is cheaper and more efficient. This makes the fracking economically justifiable, and that seems to be the main reason for the usage of certain method. Unfortunately, the fracking is not harmless to the environment. This method actually manages to cause a lot of damage to the environment, easily killing off of seriously injuring any living organisms that is nearby, thus making it a very controversial method when it comes to conservation of the environment.
