When an individual inhales air enters into the nose or mouth, and travels down the back of throat and into the windpipe, or trachea. The air travels down from the windpipe and into the bronchial tubes in the lungs. As the bronchial tubes pass through the lungs, they divide into smaller air passages called bronchioles.From the bronchioles the air finally reaches and enters the alveoli or the air sacs.

Explanation:

In our respiratory system, air which has high oxygen concentration first enters our body from either nose or mouth. Then after it enters bronchioles. Bronchioles are the structures in our respiratory system which are situated within our lungs and play an important role in the passage of air to alveoli. Alveoli are very small balloon like structures which are responsible for exchange of gases within our lungs. The number of alveoli in lungs is in millions. When we inhale air rich in oxygen it finally reaches alveoli where they are already in contact with blood vessels named as capillaries. Capillaries are a kind of blood vessels which contain blood full of carbon dioxide. Since alveloli have more oxygen and less carbon dioxide while capillaries have less oxygen and more carbon dioxide, because of this difference in concentration of these gases a pressure gradient is generated. As a result of this gradient, oxygen tends to diffuse to capillaries while carbon dioxide tends to diffuse to alveloli. This is how exchange of gases occur with the help of alveloli in our lungs.
