DNA technology has proved to be an important investigation tool for bringing forth the person responsible for criminal activity. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in US has developed Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) in 1994. This database includes the DNA profiles from crime scene evidence, DNA profiles of convicted offenders. Has also added indexes for arrestees and missing persons. This database matches the DNA profiles obtain from the crime scene with those obtain from the suspects hence, derives the similarities in the DNA by assessing the autosomal STR markers and thereby, establishes the identity.
