I'm think this because of the initial reaction to immersion in cold water, cold shock response, which starts with a gasp reflex in response to sudden and rapid chilling of the skin. You cannot gain coldness, there is only a lack of heat; heat likes everything to have the exact same temperature, your body will lose heat in order to provide heat to the area around you, in this case water.
