The Ogallala aquifer plays an important role in the farming of plants. For many years, it has been utilized without taking into consideration the long-term influence of the source getting empty. Many farmers are increasing the size of their farmlands in order to achieve bigger profits. Various plants planted are also very demanding of water, for example, commercial plants like almonds.  

As it became evident that the water for irrigation is coming to an end, many farmlands have got abandoned, and their plantations had been destroyed, and this procedure will take place until and unless no water gets left in the aquifer.
