Why do you think american artists were drawn to realism and modernism in the early twentieth century?

American artists were drawn to Realism and Modernism in the early 20th century because of the war.  Art became a form of social commentary and a physical outward expression of the artists' opinion.

 Many artists became disillusioned with war. Their feelings of disillusionment were projected in their art.
