Carving refers to sculpting or taking away parts of a material to create something. what influences it is how intricate or detailed the artist wants his/her  carving to be like. it they want small and sharp details, they use a thin or small tool. of they want something big to cut away a chunk of the material, they use a bigger tool. an example would be a statue. the material used for it would be clay and concrete mostly. the tools for it would be a sander, chisel, knife, and a mallet. hope this has helped.
