Setting a Purpose:

Read both poems carefully and slowly, thinking about what each speaker is saying about the process of growing up. Pay close attention to the images (word pictures) and metaphors the poets use to convey meaning.

Directions:

Close read, “Identity,” by Julio Noboa Polanco from the Collections: Close Reader p. 80, (also found here "Identity" (Links to an external site.)) and complete the following close reading tasks:
1. As you read, collect and cite textual evidence.

* Circle where the flowers and weeds grow.
* Underline what the speaker wants each time he says, “I’d rather.”
* In the margin next to stanzas 2, 5, and 6, write one or two words that describe the speaker.
