How did robert henri propel realism?

    Robert Henri (1865-1929), in some respects, was the spiritual father of the Ashcan School, and wanted art to be similar to journalism. He wanted painting to be as real as mud, like the lumps of horse and snow, which froze on Broadway in winter. He asked his younger friends and students to paint without realistic restrictions, without offending contemporary taste.

    He believed that working-class and middle-class urban environments would provide a material improvement for modern painters than drawing rooms and salons.
