The rule of thirds states that all photographs should be split with a grid into 9 sections with 4 focal points at the middle rectangle intersections. These 4 points are supposed to be the main points of the photograph. Photographers who are great at this can abandon the rule when they deem it necessary for various reasons including adding artistic value or something similar. You don't have to do it always but you need to know why you're not doing it.
