Gaining an appreciation basically means to connect with the subject, so for music, it can mean that you want to learn everything there is to know. Such as musical periods (i.e baroque and romantic), composers (i.e Antonio Vivaldi and Ludwig van Beethoven), classical pieces (i.e Vivaldi's Summer and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata), and where the inspiration for the music came from.
