Question: The Renaissance in Europe brought with it a multitude of social and cultural changes. Using what you have learned about humanism, breakthroughs in
arts and sciences, and the advent of the age of exploration, discuss some of the main differences between Medieval and Renaissance styles in music.
Choosing only from the pieces we studied in our textbook, compare a Medieval secular work to a Renaissance secular work, and a Medieval sacred
work to a Renaissance sacred work. Draw comparisons between them in terms of such elements as melody, harmony, form, texture, and word-music
relationship. For example, you could compare Machaut's Notre Dame Mass with Palestrina's Pope Marcellus Mass; secular songs by Machaut or Landini
with works by Weelkes or Dowland, etc.
