This practice of blackface played a significant role in cementing and proliferating racist images, attitudes, and perceptions worldwide. It was largely created for the purpose of displaying Blackness for the enjoyment and edification of white viewers. It worked to exclude real POC from the film industry, as white people could now play those characters without having to compensate black actors. White audiences largely & strongly supported it up until the 20th century when changing views about racism began to emerge.
